Dr. Henry Gault died May 23 at age 78. He had an international reputation in nephrology research, and was instrumental in building a strong program of clinical and research nephrology in this province. He is remembered by his colleagues and patients as a sensitive doctor who worked extremely hard and had a strong commitment to patient care.
Dr. Andrejs Liepins, professor of cell sciences and immunology in the Division of Basic Medical Sciences, passed away suddenly in Latvia on July 19, 2003. His major research interests were cell-mediated immunity, electron microscopy, tumour immunology, the pathophysiology of hypertension and cancer therepeutics. Dr. Liepins held many honours including the 1994 European Order of Merit, the 1995 Order of St. John of Jerusalem, and the Albert Schweitzer Medal of Honour for Sciences and Arts.
Dr. Craig Loveys died Sept. 12, 2002, at age 78, at the Dr. Hugh Thomey Veterans' Pavilion in Botwood. A former associate professor of obstetrics and gynecology in the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Loveys was a member of the Newfoundland Medical Association, the Canadian Medical Association and the Grand Falls-Windsor Rotary Club. He retired in 1987 from private medical practice and from the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Center where he was physician in charge of the obstetrical ward.
Dr. Carol L. Ross, a graduate of the class of 2000, died at her residence April 10 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. She was born Feb. 5, 1957, in Washington D.C., and was serving her psychiatry residency with the University of South Dakota School of Medicine.
Dr. Jorge Segovia died July 2, 2002. One of the most long-standing members of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Segovia came to Newfoundland in 1976 to join the faculty in the Division of Community Medicine; he served as associate dean for the division from 1991 to 1996 and in 2000 retired his full time faculty post. He maintained involvement with the faculty and students through a part-time appointment and was appointed professor emeritus in 2001.
